I still have openSuse 11 up and running with no problems so far. Somehow I was able to uninstall KDE 4 with Yast2. Luckily all the dependancies I had to deal with when removing it where directly KDE 4 related. Nothing system halting.

I went ahead and installed Joomla directly in the htdocs directory for now just to see how my Apache and MySQL install went. So far so good. Passwords set up for root and a user, database ceated and I am still wrestling with permissions and ownership at the moment with this one issue I simply am to tired to tackle this evening. Being able to make changes to template settings and saving them as the admin. Probably just a matter of setting proper permissions to edit and save, but I need sleep.

Now I’m starting to wonder if I should have just signed up for some hosting and installed that way. Sounds like transfering over a local site to a remote server is a nightmare at first glance. Ah well, as usual it probably won’t end up as bad as I think.

I’ve been giving Opensuse a shot on my desktop for a couple days and I can’t say that it’s all bad really! In all honesty, aside from pushing KDE 4 a bit too much and Yast being one of the slowest package managers I’ve used next to Zenwalk’s Netpkg, I like it.

After shutting down a few services I didn’t need and getting rid of ipv6 it’s pretty quick on my system overall. Still, there’s that Yast issue. Not the application it’s self I don’t think. I wonder if it has more to do with the mirrors themelves or the sheer number of mirrors I have added. I want to give KDE 3 a chance on here before making any final decision on whether to keep it around or not. Ubuntu is to slow and patched beyond holy hell, Fedora is to bleeding edge for me to trust any real work environment to, Debian just hates my graphics card and the commercial Nvida driver can’t find where the kernel source is installed, anything else I would consider might not be around tomorrow with having such a small user base. I’m running out of options and getting sick of setting up mysql over and over again.

Update

Now that I have it running KDE 3 everything is going pretty well. For some reason Beagle made its way on here and had to disable it. And as it turns out, the Yast speed issue is pretty common. I might just have to look into other ways to update the system. Now if I could just get KDE4 of of here to get some extra space availible.

I wanted to create some sort of testbed for a few CMS systems I want to check out. Mainly Drupal, Mambo, Joomla! and of course this WordPress thingamajig. I started with XAMPP but found it easier just setting up Apache, PHP and MySQL on my own. Who knows, maybe in a few weeks I might have a new site up and transfer this thing over. Don’t worry, it will be even more mundane and boring than it is now. I will be selling my talents as a designer and developer after all.

I have been able to take the idea of freelance graphic design and web development and make it a reality after years (yes, literaly) of day dreaming and brain-storming. I’ve settled on an operating system for my work environment, what technologies I want to focus on and ultimately what I want to accomplish.

Now I’m stuck at the branding. I cannot think of a name. It’s going to be a long night.
